If you’re visiting or telephoning the Dutch Bike Shop – you may be greeted with ‘Hello Coastal Cycles’, which can understandably gives rise to some confusion. For example, those phoning for the Dutch Bike Shop will wonder if they’ve got the right telephone number and those phoning for Coastal Cycles, Littlehampton, are equally confused.
So a short post to clarify where the two names come from.
The Dutch Bike Shop and Coastal Cycles are part of the same business and housed under the same shop roof in the lovely seaside town of Littlehampton, West Sussex.
First and foremost, we are a local bike shop serving the local communities of Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Arundel, Rustington and as far as Chichester to the West of us and Worthing to the East. Since first opening our doors in 2004, we’ve gained an enviable reputation locally for the standard of our servicing and repairs and well as for selling quality Dutch and non-Dutch bikes. Our busy shop also stocks a wide range of Dutch cycle panniers, baskets, bells, Dutch bicycle locks, super comfy saddles and so on.
Obviously we also specialise in importing quality Dutch bikes from Holland’s leading Dutch bike manufacturer, Batavus. Many of these bikes we sell locally as well as delivering them all around the UK including Northern Ireland. Our cycle workshop is also usually the first port of call for anyone locally who wants their Dutch bike or hub geared bike repaired or service. We even have a number of customers who visit us from London and further afield to have work done of their bicycles.
Our business is based on providing quality, comfortable bikes and accessories for everyday cycling. We’re not a road bike shop or a mountain bike shop, however we do not exclusively stock Dutch bikes. We stock a range of bikes from other carefully chosen cycle manufacturers whose bicycles we believe will be of interest to our local customers.
We also used to operate the largest Cycle Hire fleet in West Sussex and this is where the name Coastal Cycles came from. However, we no longer offer a bike hire service and instead we concentrate on sales and servicing. The costs of providing a bike hire service, which is essentially a seasonal business, are far too great. Just imagine trying to rent a suitably large commercial premises to house the 60 bikes we had on our fleet, which was only ever used for 6 weeks of the year together with the costs of putting a dedicated van on the road for collections and deliveries. So, with much regret we closed our Cycle Hire operation in 2015.
As the name Coastal Cycles has been established by us and many of our local customers have come to know us by this name, we decided it was a good idea to keep it. We also like it and it reflects our position here based on the lovely South East Coast.
If you’re coming to visit us and you’re travelling a distance – why not book a local hotel or guest house and enjoy the many attractions our beautiful area has to offer. Littlehampton where we are based has benefited from a number of recent government funded regeneration projects including our splendid new public realm constructed in a joint project with the Environment Agency, Arun District Council, West Sussex County Council and Littlehampton Harbour Board.
We’re also only 5 miles from the very beautiful town of Arundel where you’ll find lots of lovely shops, restaurants, Arundel Castle, Wetlands Trust as well as being the gateway to the South Downs National park.
Whatever your reason for visiting or contacting us, we hope that we can be of service to you – either by repairing or servicing your bicycles – selling you a new quality Dutch bike or non-Dutch bike.
We have some great plans for our business in 2017, so please do check back regularly to see what we’re up to.
Thanks for reading. We look forward to welcoming you to our shop in the near future.
