Hove and Brighton now boasts some excellent off-road seafront cycle rides, which are ideal for those looking to enjoy a cycle ride in a traffic free environment.
Choose where you want to go.
Enjoy a Hove, Brighton shopping experience by bicycle, or venture along the seafront cycleway that takes you all the way to Saltdean along a wonderful flat, mostly off-road cycleway.
Brighton and Hove City Council have produced some excellent free cycle guides to the routes available, copies of which are available at the time of hire. All we ask is you return the guides at the end of your hire period so that we don't waste paper unnecessarily.
As the main routes are off-road with plenty of refreshment stop along the route as well as toilets and view pionts, the routes are ideal for taking children on the bike with you. With this in mind, we have equipped some of our hire fleet with Bobike Child Seats. So you can choose to take your child in the rear seat or very small children in the front Bobike Mini complete with front windscreen.

The Personal Bike

Some years ago, Batavus designed the Personal Bike for use by dealers and cycle hire companies.
Some years on, even US President Barack Obama has one!
Key Features of the Batavus Personal Bike include:
- 3 speed Shimano Nexus gears
- Shimano roller brakes - front and rear operated by lever pull (as you would with any other bike you're familiar with).
- front hub dynamo lighting and rear battery lights
- individual registration number built into the frame
- frame lock with additional security cabling fitted in the frame
- rear carrier
- side stand
- fully enclosed chain guard and rear splash guards - so you can wear what you like without risk of your trousers being chewed up by an angry chain.
- 26" wheels - as you would have with a mountain bike - these are extra wide on the Personal bike so you're guaranteed a smoother ride.
Optional Extras:
- Child seats - front Bobike Mini and or, rear Bobike
- Front windscreen (for use with Bobike Mini Seat)
- Cycle Helmets - Please note - our insurance company insist that you wear a cycle helmet while riding our bikes, therefore we suggest you bring your own - alternatively we can provide you with one for the duration of your hire for a nominal charge.
Please Note - Models in our hire fleet is subject to change, and we regret that we cannot reserve individual models. However, we'll do our best to provide you with the model you'd like to ride.

Batavus Booster Bike!
We have one Batavus Booster bike included in our hire fleet. This somewhat 'way-out' Dutch bike really is something to ride. With it's extra chunky frame, wide tyres, and motorbike feel, it was designed primarily for use as a utility bike for the Netherlands, thus it's got a very strong, robust build/appearance and is as much vandal proof as you can get.
With a coaster brake (foot brake) and front Nexus Rollerbrake, 3 speed Shimano Nexus hub gears, and super-comfy saddle, it's delivers a great ride. Although, not for the shy, as this bike really does turn heads and attract questions.

To hire a bike, you must have a credit/debit card. If at the end of the hire, you may, if you wish, pay for your hire with cash but this is only on the basis of your credit/debit card being pre-authorised for the hire and the hire deposit.
The current retail price for a Batavus Personal Bike Deluxe is £699. We don't take a cash deposit at the time of rental, but we do pre-authorise your credit card to the value of £350. Please note that this money is not taken from your account - in fact no money is taken from your account until you return the bike, where subject to the bike being returned in the same condition as it was at the time of hire, you will only be billed for hire fees. You may wish to pay for your hire fees on termination by cash or debit card or using the same credit card that was used at the time of rental.
Identification-
If this is your first time hiring from us, we'd need to see some form of photographic identity, which could include anything from the following -
staff card - passport - driving licence -
As with all our shops, CCTV images are continually recorded for the security and safety of our customers, staff and property.
Discounts-
We offer a hirer's loyalty scheme for regular hirers details which will be available to you on your first hiring.
Full terms and Conditions -
A copy of our full terms and conditions will be made available to you at the time of hire where you will be asked to sign that you agree to them.
These conditions have been composed by our solicitors, and in summary they basically boil down to these key features -
- You're responsible for any damage, howsoever caused to our bike or any of the hire equipment.
- You're responsible for any damage or injury that your cause to anyone/anything else while out riding our bike.
- By hiring, you agree that you are fully competent and capable of riding a bike - and fit enough to ride one and also that you're fully familiar with the requirements of the Road Traffic ~Act and that you will cycle responsibily either on or off the road and pay due respects to other road users, pedestrians and so on.
- You'll return the bike to us no later than the agreed time.
- In the event that your bike is stolen - you're responsible for the entire replacement cost of the bike. Replacement values are based on trade prices, and not retail prices.
The above are not exhaustive, but cover the most important points.
Our responsibilities to you are to provide you with a quality bike, as described in our hire information (we do reserve the right to change the specification in accordance with manufacturer's build designs, which do change from time to time) and to ensure that this bike is a safe, working condition so that you can enjoy your cycling.
Our aim is to provide you with a quality Batavus Dutch bicycle for hire and that you enjoy a great day or hour's cycling.
If there is anything we can do to make your experience more enjoyable, then please let us know when you rent your bike.
Car Parking-
Pay and Display car parking is avaiable in the streets surrounding our Hove/Brighton shop. Most of these bays have a maximum 2 hour limit, however there is a very large bay just a short walk away from the shop where you can pay and display for far longer periods - all day - and at a reduced rate. Please ask our staff for details of where these locations are.
Toilets -
Public toilets are widely available all along Brighton and Hove's seafront cycle routes as well as lots of refreshment stops.
Luggage storage -
We regret that owing to the relatively small size of our Hove shop, we're unable to store personal effects and property while you are out on your hire. So please, ensure that you make alternative arrangements particularly in relation to children's push chairs and buggys.
Cycle Maps
Subject to availability we provide all our hirer's with a free cycling map, courtesy for Brighton and Hove City Council. This map details all the off-road cycle routes, places of interest and so on. All we ask you to do please is to return it to us after the hire period so we can re-used the maps. We also have a wall map available in our shop where you can see the routes available. If you're just looking for an amble along the seafront it's unlikely you'll need a map as the route is straight along the seafront and is 99% flat riding, the only hill being just outside Brighton Marina.
Any questions - please telephone us on 01273 774061 - or you can email us at dutchcycles@live.co.uk - but please, have a read of the above information which should hopefully cover most questions.
Rates for mid and high season will be available later in the year.
